Unusual “Thank You”s

They’ve called the actress up on stage. She’s said, “wow! this really is heavy!” The crowd has oohed, awed and applauded. The actress says “I’d like to start by thanking….” insert all the usual responses: the god, the family, the coworkers.

We all, of course, are thankful for these people, these opportunities, these things in our life. Some of us are blessed enough to have more of them than others. We all have something to be thankful for, whether it’s easy or hard to come up with that list, they are always there.

Today I’d like to skip ahead, fast forward through the boring parts and get to the unusual and juicy quotes.

Today I’m thankful for my therapist. ‘Cuz she listens to my crazy at a moment’s notice — as long as there’s an appointment available. She doesn’t let me give myself crap. She encourages me. Granted I have to pay her to do all of this, but that doesn’t make me less grateful. Perhaps I should be grateful for the insurance company making this service somewhat affordable for me.

I’m thankful for Chris Chibnall, Steven Moffat, and Jodie Whittaker. I’m not sure which, exactly, of these lovely people decided that a person who can completely transform bodies during each regeneration… and therefore could easily regenerate into a different gender. I’m not sure who decided to act on this information. But, I AM sure, that I am grateful for the opportunity to watch the artistry that unfolds as the doctor discovers her new personality and capabilities as a woman.

I am thankful for libraries, and my wallet is too. They make my financial capability to read much smoother, as my pocketbook simply could not handle the stress without the library’s help.

I’m thankful that my little girl is getting older… because it gives me more time to write while she’s at school! Gosh that makes me sound like a bad mom, but the peace and quiet sure does help me get things done.

I’m thankful for me, and my own growth as a woman, mother, and human being. This last year has taught me many things, including that I am a capable person. As such, I  can tell anyone what I will accept in my life, what my boundaries are, that I need an hour off from life, or that I need to stay at home instead of getting up at 2a.m. to go shopping.

I am thankful for coffee, because… coffee. And because school requires getting up at 7a.m. and I am DEFINITELY a night person.

I’m thankful for the kickass writers and creators who make shows like Supergirl and the 100.

I’m thankful for Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ellen DeGeneres, Emma Watson, Malala Yousafzai, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Frida Kahlo, Gal Gadot, Margaret Atwood, Ida B. Wells, Audre Lorde, Emily Dickinson, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Lawrence, J.K. Rowling, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, and Tina Fey.

I’m thankful for whoever first decided to let the grapes go bad (ferment) then squish all the juice out and drink it.

I’m thankful for the rush of groups like TWLOHA, We’re All Her, GISHWHES and others. Groups that celebrate diversity. Groups that encourage weirdness. Groups that don’t shy away from the hard topics. Groups that tell you not to be ashamed of your past and encourage you to go forward with strength.
